Learning to lead when rock climbing is not something that you want to get wrong! When learning to lead, whether indoors or out, sport climbing or traditional, you will benefit from some expert guidance to make sure that you’re doing it right first time.

With great coaching and small working ratios, you can learn to lead climb over a weekend, learning from experienced instructors who have been delivering courses for years. They’ll help you learn and progress your rock climbing skills, first time. After the course you will leave with the confidence and knowledge to go out and rock climb by yourself.

Whether sport climbing or trad climbing, the learn to lead course can be tailored to your needs and ability. With great locations and great instructors, you’ll get all the top tips and coaching you could want.

SPORT CLIMBING

Sport climbing is becoming increasingly popular, and with more destinations popping up around the world offering good weather and cheap prices, it’s easy to see why. In sport climbing, someone climbs a route clipping into protection (usually bolts) that are already fixed into the rock. This style pushes a climber’s abilities in a relatively safe environment, allowing them to take falls and push their own limits. Sport climbing is a great way to progress if you’re an indoor climber looking to transfer to outdoor climbing.

These courses are run in small ratios so that you can learn to lead on sport routes in complete safety under the watchful eye of our instructors. The best places to learn are in the Wye Valley near Bristol or on the coastal area of Portland.

TRADITIONAL ROCK CLIMBING

Traditional, or trad climbing as it’s commonly known, is when someone climbs a route placing protection, designed to fit into cracks, as they go. The majority of the UK’s cliffs are traditionally protected, meaning that you have to take gear such as cams, wires, and hexes with you to climb them. Being able to trad climb will allow you to better understand sport climbing, as traditional climbing is more complex. It is also a great way of exploring cliffs and mountains.

These courses are run in small ratios so that you can learn to lead on trad routes in complete safety under the watchful eye of our instructors. We can run trad climbing course around the UK. All our instructors are full members of the AMI – Association of Mountaineering Instructors and are fully qualified and experienced in teaching leading.

WHAT IS AN MCI?

LEARN TO LEAD COURSE INFORMATION

In order to attend a Learn to Lead Rock Climbing Course, you must have some indoor climbing experience, be able to belay and be familiar with basic climbing equipment such as harnesses and carabiners.

All learn to lead courses can be run on dates to suit you. You will be in a maximum ratio of 1:3 for trad and 1:6 for sport climbing courses so you get the best possible coaching and lots of time on the rock.

Our instructors are qualified through the Association of Mountaineering Instructors, holding the MCI qualification as a minimum, and are happy to pass on their knowledge from years of climbing experience. The course cost includes all equipment needed, follow up information and emails, photos, and we’ll also provide advice after the course to help start your lead climbing adventures.

LEARN TO LEAD COURSE LOCATIONS

BRISTOL - AVON GORGE

It’s difficult to put into words how good Avon Gorge really is. Only minutes away from the city centre, it has hundreds of great routes to choose from, including the Hard Rock route Malbogies, and the Classic Rock Piton Route. The Suspension Bridge Buttress is a favorite place to climb for most, being just underneath the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. With guaranteed awesome views, it is a truly memorable Bristol experience. Grades at Avon Gorge vary from Mod to E7, and nearly all involve multi-pitch rock climbing.

You can easily travel to Bristol by bus, train or plane, and with many places to stay and great night life, it makes an ideal weekend break.

THE WYE VALLEY

The Wye Valley has many amazing cliffs to its name and all of them live up to their reputation.

Wintour’s Leap is a grand day out, with huge multi-pitch rock climbing routes and stunning views down the river. Shorn Cliff has a superb selection of single pitch routes; you are usually dancing your way up pocketed limestone to good tree anchors. Symonds Yat is famous for the river rapids and a free standing pinnacle, of which an ascent is a must. I love Symonds Yat for an adventure day, abseiling in and running around bagging routes of all grades. It’s one of those places that the more you get to know it the better it becomes…trust me, I’ve climbed there a lot. Finally, Wynd Cliff has both sport and traditional climbing, making it a great place to dabble in a bit of both. It’s also a real sun trap, making it great for those days in January where everywhere else is too cold.

The Wye Valley is a breathtaking place to be; great limestone rock climbing with views over the River Wye, super pubs and beautiful wildlife.

THE SOUTH WEST

Dave Talbot – Adventure Events is based in the South West, and I have grown up on the routes around this area. Travelling down to Cornwall and climbing at Sennen or Bosigran over a long weekend has left many a fond memory. You can turn up the screws as well and jump on some esoteric classics like Skeleton Ridge, which are sure to give you an adventurous day out. If you want to climb on some of the best multi-pitch rock climbing cliffs in the UK, while enjoying seaside towns and eating ice cream then the South West is for you.

Get in touch and I can give you some ideas of the best routes to get on, as well as all the local knowledge to go with it.

ENGLAND AND WALES

It might be the case that there is a route that you’ve always wanted to do in Snowdonia, and a fun road trip up there is just the ticket for your weekend away. The Lake District might be calling your name, or the gritstone of the Peak District which has too much draw to miss out on.

The first time that I went outdoor climbing, it was at Wintours Leap with Dave coaching and guiding me. What started off with a huge fear, finished with a massive sense of achievement and great thanks for the way that Dave helped, encouraged and enabled me to overcome my worries. Exeter Cathedral Abseil. UTTERLY AMAZING.This charity Abseil started as a mad idea 4 years ago to celebrate my reaching 80. From beginning to end Dave Talbot made it seem normal, easy, fun. Terrific efficency and clear communication throughout. On the day, 54 abseilers aged 14-84 safely landed, had fun and measured a great sense of acheivement. His style, with his great team, took real care of us, made us believe in his skill and the safety of the rope. I cannot praise him and the team enough. Everyone was saying the same all day. Finally, to upload the photos before he reached home was beyond the call of duty. They were exhausted, yet still focussed on our enjoyment and satisfaction.
He has created an AMAZING company.
We have already raised a phenominal amount of money to help rebuild part of Exeter Cathedral £53,000 and it is still counting until the end of May.

The Malvern Hills Trail Half Marathon is epic! I come back this event every year as it’s so well organised, both beforehand and on the day. Dave and his team do a marvellous job of putting on what must be one of the most varied routes and terrains of UK trail events, everything from single track bluebell woods, to the open expanse of the ridge of the hills. If the weather is right, the views are stunning. It’s certainly a tough event, the climbs are steep and seemingly never ending, but it’s all worth it just for the delicious baklava supplied at the end of the race. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this event to a first timer or a seasoned trail runner.

Multipitch for Two
I contacted Dave with the crazy idea to organise a climbing day for my partner's birthday. In February. In the UK. Specifically - Bristol.
This was a feat that no one would normally accept, given that weather conditions, rock conditions and the activity being a bit risky (if you're not in the right hands) could end up being a trip to l'Hospital.
However, Dave answered the call, was really responsive and sent us Dan.
Somehow rain managed to avoid the one area we were climbing that day - (Avon Gorge: the main wall and central buttress). Rish and I learned so much from abseiling, placing gear, setting up anchors and being more on it with our communication/ calls. It was great to end the day climbing up placing trad gear and learning the mechanics of multipitch by setting up a 4 pitch climb on the Central Buttress with Dan beside us.
Both Dave and Dan have been really helpful in making sure that my other half had an awesome birthday weekend doing something we both love - climbing outdoors - and re-discovering a new side to the adventure possibilities in trad and multipitch. Thank you so much!

Great run, awesome atmosphere but the signage was just not there. Dave, you need to understand that when people are pushing at 16/17/18 km you cannot have a tiny orange arrow half covered by a bush to guide you along especially when you crossing from the opposite side of the road. There needs to be clear, eye-catching signage for the entire route. I spoke to 8 people after the race and every single one had got lost on the route at some stage. It simply was not good enough. Even the leaders/winners only ran 23km and didn’t even complete the race officially. Other than that, it was great and I will run again next year but you need to step it up with your signage.

Wye Valley Trail Race - Sept 2nd 2023.
Really good communication prior to the race. The route was beautiful, the medals are fabulous and the travel cup is brilliant.

I was one of the slower racers and it was so lovely to have people cheering and klaxons sounding as I approached the finish, and to have my medal placed over my head. There was a wonderful party atmosphere. The support for the final finisher was great too.

Lost one star for minor reasons: I would have loved a burger van or something substantial at the finish, the massage people were packing up at 4hrs, and the finish aid station was a bit bare, except for the wasps having a picnic. But, I would happily do this race again.

Wye Valley Trail Run

I love this event, definitely one of my favourite events and I have done it twice so it must be good! Fabulous venue, beautiful and challenging course along the river Wye, amazing volunteers and great aid stations. I love that it is inclusive for slower runners with a very generous cutoff time as well, so I knew I could enjoy and take lots of photos. Definitely would recommend! Also love the merch and the medal is epic!

The Wye Valley Trail Race 2023 was a fantastic experience. The course was equally beautiful and brutal! There was a really friendly feel to the event, lots of little things that make a difference like bespoke collapsible water cups through to baklava at the finish line. Pre-race information was thorough and the event was well organised. I'd happily sign up to another event with this company.

What a fantastic team! A group of us abseiled from the top of the maternity block at Ipswich Hospital to raise money for the Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity. Dave Talbot's team was top-notch, giving us expert training and a safety briefing before we made our way to the top of the tower. We always felt safe and had such a great time completing the abseil.

My first ultra event and second event with Dave Talbot Events.

What can I say?
The team are a fantastic bunch, well organised, vast experience and made me feel so welcome throughout.
I’d recommend this team very much and have just signed up for another run with them in September.
I actually sustained an injury on this ultra, nothing too major but enough to retire after 30km.
Yes I was disappointed, the team had nothing but praise and warm feedback, even giving me a consolation medal so when I asked about doing this again, the staff encouraged me to do so.
I can’t say enough how well drilled they all are and how much fondness I have for them all, hoping to see them soon and trust me, do an event like this with them and you will not regret it.

This was my first Ultra run, in fact, my first ever long distance. Up until signing up I had only done 10 mile races. As a newby, Dave and his team were amazing in prepping me for something as massive as the BB Ultra. I did the 10 Peak Challenge as prep during the walk Dave and his team answered all my ultra questions and more. That day was such an eye opener. I don't think I would have made the finish line without the team sharing so much of their expertise. During the BB Ultra itself, my beginners naivity became apparent, as I wobbled into checkpoint 2 with cramp, the crew took such amazing care of me, I was able not only to finish the race, but also to do an amazing time.
It was apparant everyone on the team knew their stuff. They knew how I was was feeling and what I needed, through their own experiences. This made it a very safe space and also very welcoming and warm. It really did feel like we were one big family. Absolutely loved the community spirit of this event! If you are considering a challenge, Dave Talbot and his team are your people!

The Toubkal trip with Dave (and a lovely bunch of people) was fabulous and we enjoyed everything about it!

Dave’s an inspiring mountain leader with boundless energy and (seemingly) limitless good humour, great skills and a plan for everything.

Everyone had great fun and it was a totally relaxed and the perfect introduction to high altitude mountaineering (in sunny, spectacular Morocco).

Excellent, fun day of trad climbing in the Wye Valley with Dan via Dave Talbot's company. On the admin side, Dave was impressively responsive to all our queries and was also swift on checking in re how everything went. On the climbing side, Dan was great company (so many jaw dropping stories) and managed to pack in a lot into just a day of climbing against the wonderful backdrop of the Wye Valley (a couple of short sport routes; a thorough refresh of trad climbing basics including lowering down, belay set up, gear placement; and just the right level grade for a low level multi-pitch to give us the confidence of being able to do everything ourselves).

We had an absolutely brilliant day hiking across the Brecon Beacons taking in 13 (cheeky extra 3 in there!) peaks as we went. The day went like a well oiled machine thanks to Dave and his team, yet lovely and relaxed at the same time. We had so much fun and spent most of the day laughing. The massive smiles are still on our faces as we thump back down to reality on a Monday morning. This is the second event I've done with Dave and I am looking forward to my next one. Dave and his team made the day so much more enjoyable, they were very organized, caring and so friendly that it made me feel so relaxed in their company knowing that they put our safety first and making sure the participants feel comfortable and no one gets left out!

I would highly recommend Dave’s company if you are looking for a challenge, you will definitely succeed with their encouragement, and you will have a great time!! Also the support vehicle has Loads of treats… not to mention the very yummy chocolate ginger cakes!

Once again thank you for a memorable day, it really was a great day!

This company are amazing, I did a charity abseil yesterday to raise money for the local hospitals. When I signed up I knew it would be a real challenge as I am scared of edges, but I wanted to push myself to do something different and raise money. This team are amazing, they could see I was nervous and they really looked out for me.
I said about 4 times, I cannot do it, even stood on the edge, and they encouraged me and told me I could, and I did!!! It was scary but amazing, I could not have done it without Dave stood at the top telling me its okay and I can do it.
They are a totally professional, amazing team, and I would recommend then to anyone that wants to abseil but is a bit unsure about it, you will get the support to help you over come your fears and do it! Brilliant experience, brilliant team! Thank you so much!

I recently completed the 2021 Malvern trail half run by Dave Talbot. What an excellent event. From the off it was evident what a friendly bunch Dave and his team were. Absolutely fantastic, can't fault any of them, all encouraging and enthusiastic.
The course, was fantastic, after 10k it really ramped up as described in the course description ! Certainly not easy but achievable. I am 54, my wife the same age. Far from youngsters but we loved it. I was an hour behind the winner, so need to adjust my training for next year slightly !! There was no time pressure to finish and my wife found that a good thing as she was a bit worried about timings but all finishers were welcomed in with the bells & whistle just the same, first or last. Views from on top of the hills had to be seen to be believed. The effort was certainly worth it and we felt a massive sense of pride once the race was conquered, and got a nice medal & Tshirt as a reminder. We will be back !

Look a outdoor sport climbing course with DTAE. It was great. There was a mix of experience but instructor Dan pitched the course at the right level for everyone. Dan managed the crag availability and timing really well and gave us all some extra experience and threw in some extra coaching for some other new skills. A certainly feel that after this day, my climbing ability leveled up. Felt safe all the time too.

I completed the 10 Peaks Brecon Beacon Challenge last Saturday. It was a tough day but was good fun with the different people in the group and felt assured by the experienced instructors running the challenge. They knew the route well and the day was really well thought out. There were a few stops to break up the 9 hour hike, a support vehicle at different check points to quickly top up water, food or change clothes etc and Dave is really bubbly and gives you lots of encouragement. He even baked cakes for the event. I would definitely recommend this company especially if you fancy getting outdoors on an affordable adventure with likeminded people but with the safety of an experienced guide. You wont be disappointed.

Did the Snowdonia 10 peaks challenge. What an experience! Easily one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in years. Great bunch people running the operations and participating in the group challenge. It was well planned and plenty of good humour and banter keeping everyone going through. Met some really interesting people. The second big incline was a killer but everyone seemed to recover once up there with the views. I’ll defiantly be interested in further challenges. Track support was really good plenty of food set up and great to change clothes and top up supplies. Dave is a top bloke!

Myself and 2 friends did a 4 day course on multi-pitch climbing in Snowdonia which was excellent. We wanted to climb as a party of three and Dave was very helpful in finding a guide that could help us with this logistical challenge. Just finished a "Learn to lead/sport climb outdoors" course with Dave and I've got to say how appreciate I was of Dave for the day.

My brother and I came from an indoor top roping background and were quite worried about our lack of experience in the great outdoors and lead climbing safely. Dave explained in an email that the key is getting the basics and theory correct and getting the mileage in to gain confidence and he was absolutely right! We were both really impressed with how Dave took us from complete novices to confident beginners!

Dave went over and above what we were expecting, from starting with the absolute basics where we wanted to check our existing habits with him and we were better able to correct ourselves and understand why these processes are safe. I think a lot of climbing courses we have done before are instructed at a very basic level and aimed towards children, and Dave's style of instructing was able to meet us at our level and was a great balance of knowledge and experience,

Dave picked a really good day and location for the climbing which made the day that much more enjoyable. During the day we tried lots of different scenarios giving us really good experience, we also had the opportunity to try different belay devices and other equipment and Dave was very helpful in going beyond the basics to slightly more advanced knowledge which will be very useful in the future, and also gives us more confidence that if we can overcome problems on our own and really how we should be thinking in order to have fun and climb safely.

It was a really great day, Dave was very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly and was really fun to have around whilst also instilling lots of knowledge in us and gave us a great experience of real outdoor climbing and I must say he managed to encourage us on even when we were quite high up in a desperate situation, which at the time I was thinking "Dave, I am really stuck" but he was really good at instilling the confidence to keep pushing on, which is something I think will stay with us for the rest of our climbing journey. Thanks Dave!

It was hot and at times we (not Dan) got a bit bothered, but we had a super day on Saturday. Dan was calm, knowledgeable and very reassuring on the rock. Both our boys (aged 9 and 11) really liked him, gained varied experience and now have their first belays under their belts. As soon as we got home and unpacked the car they were both glued to the 'Climbing Blind' documentary and have downloaded 'The Dawn Wall' on Dan's recommendation. Safe to say we will be back in touch in the future....

Had an excellent experience on a two day Trad Lead course. Dave was very responsive and helpful with everything beforehand (and afterwards), and our instructor, Danny, tailored every aspect of the course to be precisely what we were looking for. Could not fault the local knowledge, gear provided, relaxed approach, wider subject knowledge, company, or, really, any other aspect.
My husband and I were supported to achieve more than we'd expected, whilst feeling safe at every turn. Definitely finished the second day happy to go out and tackle simple trad routes independently now, which was exactly what we'd set out to learn.

We did a 1 day lead climb course in the Wye Valley with local instructor Jamie, we went to a couple of different crags trying trad & sport climbing. The climbs were perfectly suited to our abilities and what we hoped to achieve from the day, with some fantastic views and even managing to avoid the expected downpours! We're already making plans to go back and do more climbing!

I did a 1-day trad course with Dave Talbot, instructed by MI Danny. Danny made the day completely based around our experience and what we aimed to get from the day, which was perfect. We were lucky with perfect weather and quiet walls, and Danny taught us a lot about the techniques and also little personal tricks for things like gear arrangement. I'd definitely book with them again and would recommend them to anyone looking for something like this.

I went on a group trip to Slovenia where Dave was one of the two mountain guides we had for the few days over which we planned to summit Mt Triglav in the Julian Alps. Although mother nature was very much against us in the form of torrential rain, thunderstorms and lightening - Dave had several options as a backup plan which he posed back to the group to decide. We managed to scale some waterfalls via ferrata, take a trip to Lake Bohinj, and then ascended partway up Triglav before admitting a soggy defeat some hours later. We all had a ton of fun, and really appreciated our guides being able to think on their feet and still give us 3 days of mountain madness :D

We went on an Introduction to lead climbing course in Bristol with a local instructor Danny. The course felt perfectly tailored to our requirements. The content was at the right level, exactly what we needed to know, and we felt safe and confident at every step. Danny was a very knowledgeable guide as well as fun and easy to get along with.

The service was very reasonably priced and I would happily come here for future learning!

Dave and Robyn guided a group of us to four 4000+m peaks in the Atlas Mountains, including Toubkal - the highest in North Africa. They were always full of energy and continually kept the team motivated. You were never in doubt that they were fully prepared for all eventualities, using ropes when required and even having a foam roller for those of us with tight muscles!

On top of this, they were always teaching us important mountain skills, with demonstrations and giving everyone the chance to practice these skills in a safe and fun but relevant environment. I also thought they were excellent at tailoring the experience to different peoples wants and needs. A personal example: i was keen to learn more about ice-climbing. Dave had clearly noted this and took the time to discuss extra ice-axe techniques with me, even hanging out by a frozen waterfall at the end of a long day to teach me a few skills in-depth!

Without a doubt my favourite adventure holiday of the year - i'm already looking to book another one with Dave in the New year!

Dave and his team hosted Noah's Ark Charity Dangle event Sunday 16th October 2016 from Newport Transporter Bridge and we couldn't have picked a better team of instructors to help us.

Dave and his team hosted a charity abseil for us in London a couple of weeks ago and we couldn't have picked a better person to help us.
From the outset he was proactive, friendly and incredibly helpful, not only finding us a venue but roping in (no pun intended) some extra participants on the day too.
Having sworn I would never abseil, I found myself feeling so relaxed and safe with the guys that not only did I complete the 130ft challenge, I did it three times... thank heaven for the photos they took to prove it!
