Climbing in the Avon GorgeAwesome Limestone Cliffs towering just outside the centre of Bristol. The gorge runs south to north through a limestone ridge 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Bristol city centre, and about 3 miles (5 km) from the mouth of the river at Avonmouth. In the 18th century the gorge was quarried to produce building stone for the city. The steep walls of the gorge support some rare fauna and flora, including species unique to the gorge.
