I was working over the weekend on a learn to lead course based in the Bristol area.  A learn to lead course teaches you all you need to know about leading trad routes so you can get out by yourself and start exploring.

The first day we went to Goblin Comb and looked a lot at the theory side of the learn to lead course as the weather wasn’t the best. The next day the weather was glorious and we headed to Avon Gorge. We started off by climbing Morpheus in 5 pitches, getting the guys to mock lead and rig belays, lowering each other and getting used to managing stances. We then looked at rigging abseils, top ropes and bottom ropes and they practiced that. We finished by putting it all together and Ed and Liz climbed ‘The Arete’, graded VD in 2 pitches and then sorted out an abseil to get off all by themselves, which is a top effort.

Really nice feel to everything in Avon Gorge today there was lots of climbers out and about, the flowers and wild life shone bright with the sun, a peregrine falcon did a display and boats were using the waterways. Great place to be.
